Session 1: Cash Flow and Risk Management (90 minutes)

  • How to create saving, spending, and debt repayment thresholds to align with your short and long term financial goals
  • How much is sufficient as an emergency reserve and how to keep it safe, liquid, and earning a competitive interest rate in today’s environment
  • How to set a budget for a home purchase and what to know about securing a mortgage
  • How to protect against the risks of death, disability, lawsuits, and cyber-crime (specialty-specific disability insurance, enough life insurance for your family goals, umbrella insurance for personal asset protection, and freezing your credit)

Session 2: Investments and Taxes (90 minutes)

  • Understanding the basics of designing an investment strategy – what is a stock, what is a bond, and how to align the risk in your investments with your long term financial goals
  • Thinking about tax optimization across various investment accounts
  • What is a backdoor Roth IRA and how and why to consider funding one
  • Basic components of tax return including opportunities cardiologists may be able to take advantage of
  • What to think about with “side-hustle” income (medical legal consulting, extra call pay, pharmaceutical advisory, etc) and how to maximize its tax benefits

Session 3: Negotiate for Your Value (90 minutes)

  • How to use benchmark data to determine your value to an academic institution or medical system
  • How to benchmark your current pay structure to benchmarks to determine whether your current income structure is competitive or needs negotiated upon next renewal
  • Negotiation strategy and techniques to build your plan for an upcoming negotiation
  • Points to look out for in an employment contract and what to be sure you know about your current contract
  • How private equity has entered the conversation in cardiology and questions to ask if your group is considering a private equity transaction
